The Salt Smart Award
2011 Winners Announced: The University of Strathclyde University Students' Union
LoSalt this year launched a brand new award for university and college caterers. The Salt Smart Award, launched with the University Caterer Magazine, aimed to reward those caterers who had taken the most effective strategy to reduce sodium content in their cafeterias and increase salt awareness. The winners of the Award, the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, were given their Award at the annual Skills for Chefs Conference in Sheffield in July.
LoSalt, as the UK's leading low sodium salt alternative, is leading the battle against excess sodium intake and used this Salt Smart Award to target the UK's student population.
Universities and colleges from England, Scotland and Wales all entered and reported the successful implementation of a low sodium strategy. Entrants were given LoSalt materials and samples to help promote salt awareness in their canteens. They were then to come up with recipes for healthy dishes using LoSalt to be served in their canteens as well as providing evidence of how they reduced sodium across their menu and educated students about the dangers of excess salt.
Entries were judged by a panel including the Blood Pressure Association, CASH (Consensus Action on Salt and Health), the University Caterer and LoSalt.
Strathclyde University Students' Union received the highest number of votes with the University of Warwick a close second. They submitted a wide range of dishes using LoSalt and clearly displayed how they had greatly reduced the sodium in their menu.
