Top Tips
We could all be more health-conscious.
Here are some top tips and healthy hints for the kitchen:
- use unsaturated oils and margarines for spreading and cooking;
- use wholemeal flour, pasta, bread and rice;
- use LoSalt in cooking and at the table (if you need the taste of salt);
- use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk in cooking and for drinking;
- grill instead of frying whenever possible; and
- steam vegetables instead of boiling (without salt) until just crisp.
For a healthy, varied diet:
- eat more starchy, fibre-rich foods such as bread, potatoes,
pasta, rice and cereals; - eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables - aim for 5 servings each day;
- cut down on fat by choosing leaner meat, more fish, lower fat
dairy foods and fewer fried or fatty foods; - eat less salty foods and choose reduced sodium products when shopping.
- For cooking or at table, use a reduced sodium salt such as LoSalt; and
- go easy on sugar and sugary foods.
